Meet the Provost and Vice President

Provost Ryan Schroeder, Ph.D., is the Chief Academic Officer and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Indiana State University. Dr. Schroeder brings more than twenty years of distinguished experience as a scholar, educator, and transformative academic leader. Most recently serving as dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and interim dean of the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies at Georgia Southern University, he has led with a clear focus on measurable outcomes and lasting institutional impact. Under his leadership, his college experienced substantial growth in enrollment, expanded graduate education, improved retention and graduation outcomes, and significantly increased external funding and philanthropic support in service of students and faculty.


Throughout his career, Dr. Schroeder has demonstrated a consistent ability to align academic innovation with student success, strengthen faculty engagement, and build partnerships that extend the reach and relevance of the university. His leadership reflects both strategic clarity and a deep understanding of the evolving role of higher education in preparing students for a dynamic and complex world. Focused intently on developing career readiness and successes across all academic programs, Dr. Schroeder’s leadership magnifies the impact of higher education for students and the surrounding communities, while maintaining a commitment to the traditional academic values of exploration, deep learning, and exposure to the full range of ideas and perspectives that characterize civic and social life.


Dr. Schroeder earned a Ph.D. and master’s degree from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, all in Sociology. His areas of academic expertise include criminal behavior, deviance, and juvenile delinquency with a specific emphasis on the roles of family, religiosity, health, drug use, and identity.
