To correctly place students in mathematics courses, or other courses for which math skills are critical, students are required to take the Math Placement Test. All students (incoming and transfer) are required to take the online test. The Math Placement Test should be completed prior to arrival at orientation to avoid any barriers during registration. This will ensure that you are able to register for the best courses for your degree path. Failure to complete the test may lead to a delay in taking critical courses towards your degree.

The Math Placement Test will help an advisor assist you in registering for the math course where you will be most successful. There is no charge to take the Math Placement.

Steps to Prepare to take the test:

  1. Take the practice test
You should allow yourself approximately 1 hour.
  2. Refresh your math skills
  3. Follow this link to access the actual test.
    1. Enroll in the Canvas course. Click Go to the Course.
  4. Follow the instructions exactly. NOTE: You may only take the test one time.

FAQ

Math placement testing allows us to better identify the introductory math course that best matches your current skill level. For instance, while one student might come to college equipped with the necessary skills to take a calculus course, another student may first need pre-calculus, while another might need to brush up on algebra. The Math Placement score may also be required for placement in some science courses.

Take Test A first. Test A has 18 questions. If you score a 12 or higher, you qualify to take Test B which has 12 questions. You want to take both parts if allowed.

Yes, you can use a calculator and scratch paper but may not use any apps or websites. You may NOT use the calculator on your phone.

No. You need to take this on a computer as you will do so in a LockDown browser for security purposes.

Scores are uploaded every weekday so your scores should show up in MySam 1-2 days after testing.

The Math Placement should only be taken one time. Therefore, do your best! There are some instances, however, where a student may retake the test with their advisor’s approval if there are technical difficulties. Contact your advisor to discuss your situation. If your advisor grants approval for a retest, they will contact University Testing.
