Fraternity and Sorority Life

The fraternity and sorority life organizations at Indiana State University advocates for and supports the fraternity and sorority community, offering opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, academic excellence, and community service.

The mission of Fraternity and Sorority Life is to serve as an advocate and resource for the fraternity and sorority life community. We provide our students with opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and support in their pursuit of academic excellence which adds value to the student's holistic collegiate experience.

Fraternities and sororities encourage leadership growth, academic excellence, and pride in campus activities. Indiana State University's fraternities and sororities serve the campus community through leadership positions, involvement in on-campus activities, dedication to academics, and engaging in philanthropic and community service endeavors.

Indiana State University’s Fraternity and Sorority Community is comprised of 25 fraternal organizations under the umbrella of three governing councils which include the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, and the Panhellenic Association.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at Indiana State University is composed of 6 international historically African American fraternities and sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council headquarters serves the purpose to "foster cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern. To this end, the NPHC promotes the well-being of its affiliate fraternities and sororities, facilities the establishment and development of local councils of the NPHC and provides leadership training for its constituents."

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is composed of 10 fraternity chapters and provisional chapters at Indiana State University. The North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) is the national umbrella organization for most IFC member fraternities. The NIC strives to "advocate the needs of its member fraternities through enrichment of the fraternity experience; advancement and growth of the fraternity community; and enhancement of the education mission of the host institutions."

Panhellenic Association (PA)

The Panhellenic Association (PA) is composed of 9 sorority chapters at Indiana State University. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the national governance organization for the 9 member organizations on campus. NPC is "focused on advancing the sorority experience," and is "committed to relationships built on trust through transparency, accountability, and mutual respect. Innovation and their core values of friendship, leadership, service, knowledge, integrity, and community guide them in fulfilling that mission."

Need Extra Help?

There are tons of tutoring services available should you need some extra help with a class. Check out these on campus solutions!

Student Academic Services Center: SASC routinely employs a staff of peer tutors to assist ISU students with specific courses. There is a concentrated effort to provide tutoring for the majority of courses currently listed under our General Education categories.

ISU Writing Center: The Indiana State University Writing Center serves ISU students from all courses at any stage in the writing process. Although the largest group of students comes from the writing courses taught in the English Department, students from approximately 150 different courses other than English visit the Center during an average semester for help with a variety of writing assignments.

Mentoring for Academic Success: The Mentoring for Academic Success Program provides additional academic support to students enrolled in the ISU Academic Opportunity Program (AOP), to students enrolled in the Open Preference Program, (OP), to students who are 21st Century Scholars, and to veterans of military service. Students who participate will be paired with an upper classman or graduate student for monitoring academic progress. Mentors will meet weekly with students to facilitate the development of skills for college success, such as time management, note taking, and test taking. A mentor also serves as a referral source when other services are needed. Student can develop realistic educational goals as well as specific semester goals with the assistance of a mentor. Student’s mentors submit weekly reports updating progress toward attaining these goals.

A: First, they will have to enroll in the recruitment process (for the Interfraternity Council or Panhellenic Association) or attend informational/interest meetings and events (for National Pan-Hellenic Council). The recruitment and intake processes are different based on the council, but they base themselves around being introduced to current members and deciding which organization in which they feel that they "fit." Once selected for membership, students will go through a further education, orientation, and onboarding process within their chosen fraternity/sorority.

A: Yes. Joining a fraternity or sorority isn’t free, but it is well worth it. Cost varies from group to group, but membership lasts a lifetime! The average cost is around $425 per semester for IFC/PA organizations (not including housing, if available), with some additional one-time fees during the first semester of membership. NPHC membership averages to a one-time payment of $1800, and data is still being gathered for the Athenian Council. If interested in the Panhellenic Association, there is also a small fee to register to participate in recruitment.

A: Typically, fraternity or sorority students' grades increase after joining a fraternity or sorority. With study groups, GPA requirements, required study hours, and the atmosphere of other people doing their work, your student should be influenced to excel in their classes. The average GPA of the fraternity/sorority community is regularly above a 3.0 and typically exceeds the average GPA of all undergraduate students! Over the last decade, the 1- and 2-year retention rates for FSL members have been 20% higher than the ISU average, and 4 and 6 year graduation rates have been significantly higher.

A: Not all fraternities and sororities have a recognized facility, and live-in requirements depend on the organization. Be sure to encourage your student to ask these questions during the recruitment process. If the organization has a facility, your student will want to live in the fraternity or sorority housing to take advantage of the opportunities it presents. Encourage your student to talk to the members who currently live in the fraternity or sorority housing (if available) for more information about what it's like to live there.

A: Those who believe they are being hazed, have witnessed hazing in any form, or have questions of what constitutes hazing should contact the Office Student Engagement, Leadership and Fraternity & Sorority (812) 237-3840, the Office of Student Success and Accountability (812) 237-3800, and/or the Inter/National Headquarters of the specific group involved. Anyone may also submit a General Conduct Incident Report via Student Conduct & Integrity.

A: In addition to increased academic performance and graduation rates, fraternities and sororities at Indiana State University provide a sense of belonging on campus for members. In addition, members receive real transferrable skills that can be used in their future career, along with a built-in network of alumni and advisor support. According to Gallup research on the experience and outcomes of fraternity and sorority members in college, work, and life, Gallup found that individuals affiliated with a fraternal organization had great college experiences, felt more prepared for life after college, and are more likely to be thriving in their wellbeing.

Effective January 27, 2022, chapter placed on an Emergency Action status to cease and desist operations and activities pending investigation, which was lifted by Indiana State on May 12, 2022 on the condition that the chapter work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and its own organization leadership in establishing a clearer understanding of hazing and to establish positive boundaries and expectations between the chapter membership and alumni.

Effective February 11, 2022 International Headquarters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. issued cease and desist order for chapter and individual members through it's own internal investigation and discipline determination. Status was lifted effective August 30, 2022. Chapter was placed on probation until February 11, 2025, and during the probation period the chapter cannot conduct a Membership Intake Process (MIP). All current members graduated by 2023, and organization is not currently active on campus.

Organization Status

Effective May 2020, found responsible for: 3.1.6 - Hazing and 3.3.4c- Alcohol Related Behavior: Furnishing alcohol to persons younger than 21. Organization placed on temporary suspension from recognition at Indiana State University, and cannot function without direct guidance from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. 

Effective March 4, 2021, organization reinstated from Temporary Separation and placed on Conduct Probation, and must have all activities pre-approved by Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in advance. Organization may request removal from Conduct Probation status in December 2021.

Effective April 2021, found responsible for 3.2.3 - Failure to Comply and 3.2.3 - Failure to Comply: Temporary Student Directives for the Prevention of COVID-19. Organization is subject to all previous conduct outcomes. In addition, Conduct Probation extended through September 1, 2023, cannot host events with alcohol for the remainder of 2021, must complete community restitution, and must complete risk reduction education and community presentation. 

Effective December 2, 2022 organization placced on financial temporary suspension by inter/national headquaters and is unable to hold any activities, events, chapter operations, and/or business of the Fraternity until outstanding fees are paid in full. Suspension lifted on February 12, 2023 and chapter returned to operating status.
