wo young women are seated at a table in a library or study area, smiling at each other as they review a document with graphics and text. The woman on the left, with straight, shoulder-length, blondish-brown hair, holds the document, which appears to have a colorful map on the visible side. The other woman has curly, dark-brown, shoulder-length hair. The table has computers and books, indicating a collaborative academic or work setting.

How to Apply as a Freshman

1. Determine Your Status

You may apply to Indiana State University as a freshman if:

  • You're a current high school student and have completed your junior year in high school.
  • You've graduated high school and have not attended another college since graduating.
  • You've completed Indiana’s High School Equivalency (HSE) or GED and have not enrolled in any colleges.

For application types other than freshman, please visit our Admissions page.

2. Check Important Deadlines

We accept freshman applications throughout the year. Priority deadlines are:

  • Fall semester: August 1
  • Spring semester: January 1
  • Summer session: May 1

Note: Applications received after these deadlines will still be accepted, and we will attempt to have you enroll in your desired semester or term.

3. Review Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete a rigorous college preparatory curriculum (Core 40 curriculum for Indiana residents).
  • Maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 2.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

4. Apply to Indiana State University

Create an account to begin. You can always save and return to your application. Be sure to carefully review your information before submitting.

Note: it is important to use an email address that will stay with you after high school graduation. Please do not use your high school email address, as it will be deactivated.

5. Submit Application Materials

  • High school transcripts: The transcript must be sent directly from your high school to Indiana State University electronically or through mail. Note: Official HSE and GED scores may be substituted for high school transcripts. (See below for important details.)

Transcripts

  • These may include:
  • Returning Students: If you’ve taken classes at Indiana State University before, you do not need to order an Indiana State transcript. We already have access to your coursework here.
  • Dual credit transcripts: To receive credit for dual credit college courses taken during high school, send official transcripts from the awarding institution to Indiana State.
  • What Makes a Transcript “Final”?: A transcript is considered final when:
    • It shows no coursework in progress.
    • If applicable, it lists your graduation date.
  • What Makes a Transcript “Official”?
    For domestic transcripts:
    • Must come directly from the issuing institution to Indiana State; must not pass through the student’s hands.
    • Delivery options:
      • Email: admissions@indstate.edu
      • Mail:
        Indiana State University
        Office of Admissions
        318 North 6th St
        Terre Haute, IN 47809
      • Electronic services such as Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse
  • First-Time Freshmen and Transfer Students (Applying for Undergraduate Program)
    • To make a provisional admission decision, we can accept an official transcript that does not need to be final.
    • You can register for your first semester without submitting a final transcript if there is not a gap of at least one spring or fall semester between graduation/coursework completion and starting at Indiana State.
      • Example: Graduate Spring 2026 → Start Fall 2026 = OK
    • You must submit a final official transcript before registering for your second semester.
If there is a gap (e.g., graduate Spring 2026 → start Spring 2027), we must receive your final official transcript(s) before making an admission decision.
  • Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT): SAT and ACT scores are not required for admission. However, they may be required for certain merit-based scholarships. If you wish to be considered, official scores must be sent directly from the testing agency (College Board or ACT, Inc.) to Indiana State University's Office of Admissions. Scores submitted by the student will not be considered official and will not be used in scholarship decisions.
  • Military forms: To receive credit for military service, you must submit a DD 214 and/or a Joint Services Transcript.
Military-affiliated students who are not Indiana residents will be granted the Indiana resident tuition rate upon admission.
  • AP Test scores: To receive credit for AP tests taken, send official College Board test results to Indiana State.
  • Permanent Resident Card: If you are a permanent resident, please submit a copy of your alien registration card (Green Card).
