Frequently Asked Questions
During New Sycamore Orientation (NSO), you will participate in academic sessions with your college’s faculty and staff, learn about campus resources, register for courses, and meet current and incoming Indiana State students. All students are required to attend the entire orientation program and will not be allowed to leave the program early for any reason. We encourage you to plan accordingly.
You will complete online modules that will teach you about Indiana State University, student resources and policies, and success strategies. Upon completion of the online modules, you will be connected with an academic advisor.
- Complete the checklist in the New Student Dashboard.
- Check your Sycamore email account daily.
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
- Review information about housing.
- Bring chargers, medications, snacks, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Prepare for rain (bring an umbrella).
- Attend all sessions of NSO. All sessions are required for students.
- Submit documents (final high school transcripts, college transcripts, immunization records, and financial aid documents).
- Be on time: Indiana State University is on Eastern Standard Time.
- Find a quiet spot and comfortable space: You will complete several online modules.
- Meet with your advisor: After you complete your online orientation modules, your academic advisor will reach out to set up a registration appointment.
- Download Zoom: This is needed for your advising appointment.
- Submit documents (final high school transcript, college transcripts, immunization records, and financial aid documents).
The Office of Residential Life offers “hotel-style” housing for students and guests. Students should make the reservation in the Housing Portal. Students and guests can reserve one or two rooms for the night before and/or after NSO. Students and families stay together. The room will have two extra-long twin beds. Sheets, blankets, pillows, and towels will be provided.

If you book a room, mention you are in town for NSO at Indiana State. Some hotels offer discounts.
The Visitor’s Bureau has options for places to eat and visit in the Terre Haute community.
First-year, on-campus students will meet with an academic advisor during NSO to register for courses.
Students attending an in-person New Sycamore Orientation will receive their student ID card during NSO.
