Begin Your Professional Journey

You will be assigned a preprofessional advisor, who will help you develop a strategy for completing prerequisites, identifying an appropriate major, and navigating the application process for graduate school.

During your second or third semester of study, you will select a major field of study (degree program). A faculty advisor is then assigned to help you develop a plan to meet Indiana State University’s degree requirements for that major. Make sure you also declare Pre-Athletic Training at this time to ensure your plan includes the prerequisite courses for the Master’s in Athletic Training (MAT) program. Most MAT students major in Applied Medicine or Kinesiology.

Important: You are encouraged to contact the department chair (Dr. John Pommier, 812-237-4065, John.Pommier@indstate.edu) for clarification about this pre-professional program or Master’s in Athletic Training Program Director (Dr. Timothy Demchak, 812-237-5360, Timothy.Demchak@indstate.edu) for clarification about this pre-professional.

Suggested Majors and Minors

Pre-athletic training pairs well with Applied Medicine and Kinesiology majors. Students can fulfill most of the prerequisite course requirements as electives in these majors without having to take extra coursework. The Massage Therapy or Strength and Conditioning minors will aid the students in developing clinical skills that transfer directly into athletic training.

Students majoring in Applied Medicine or Kinesiology may be able to complete their Master’s in Athletic Training degree in five (5) years through a 3+2 pathway. Each pathway allows you to complete the first 10 undergraduate credits during the first summer session of the MAT program. Each pathway may be modified based on the college credit you completed in high school or transferred into Indiana State University. Click the appropriate link for the suggested 3+2 pathway for Applied Medicine majors or 3+2 pathway for Kinesiology majors.
