Welcome to the Summer Semester at Indiana State University!
FAFSA Year
Indiana State University processes summer as a trailer to the academic year, meaning that each award year is comprised of Fall Term – Spring Term – Summer Term, in that order.
To receive financial aid for a summer term, you must have a FAFSA on file for the preceding award year, even if you are beginning a new program in the summer. For example, to get aid for Summer 2026, you must file a 2025-26 FAFSA by the deadline of June 30, 2026.
- Don’t forget to add our school code (001807) to your FAFSA!
Start Dates for Shorter Sessions
Indiana State University offers courses of varying lengths during the summer term which have start dates staggered throughout May, June and early July. Aid disburses approximately 3-5 days prior to each start date.
- Pell example: If you are enrolled in 3 hours beginning in May and 3 hours beginning in June, you will receive a portion of your Pell grant 3-5 days prior to the May start date and a portion of your Pell grant 3-5 days prior to the June start date.
- Loan example: If you are enrolled in 3 hours beginning in May and 3 hours beginning in June, no loans will disburse until you reach half-time enrollment, which will be 3-5 days prior to the start date in June.
- Enrollment deadline: In order to receive the maximum Federal aid for the summer term, you must be registered in all planned courses prior to the last Friday in June.
Federal Aid
- If you are eligible for Pell based on income, summer Pell will automatically disburse to your account unless you decline it on the Summer Aid Request Form, located on the Student Root forms page.
- If you have Direct Loan eligibility remaining because you did not borrow the annual maximum for your grade level during the Fall and Spring terms, you may request Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans using the Summer Aid Request Form.
- The amount of the loan is based on your grade level at the beginning of the academic year.
- You must be enrolled in 6 hours for undergraduate students or 3 hours for graduate students.
- To borrow a Parent Plus loan, please ask your biological or adoptive parent to apply at studentaid.gov.
- You must be enrolled in 6 hours (half-time for undergraduate students) for a Parent Plus loan to pay.
- Graduate Plus loan applications can also be found at studentaid.gov for students who have borrowed a Direct Loan at any time prior to July 1, 2026. Graduate Plus loans are no longer available to first-time borrowers after July 1, 2026.
- Enrollment of 5 or more hours (half-time for graduate students) is required.
State Aid
Child of Veteran/Public Safety Officers (CDV/CVO)
- This award requires an application and approval by the State of Indiana. See ScholarTrack.in.gov to apply.
- If you are already receiving CDV, this will automatically disburse for summer unless you decline it on the Summer Aid Request Form, located on the Student Root forms page.
- Graduate students receiving CDV are awarded at the undergraduate tuition rate, per State of Indiana regulations.
Fast Track
- If you are a 21st Century Scholar or a Frank O’Bannon recipient who has completed all 30 credit hours during the Fall and Spring and you want to attend at least 6 hours in the summer in order to graduate early, you may qualify to use Fast Track in the summer. This award requires an application and approval by the State of Indiana. See ScholarTrack.in.gov to apply.
- Similar to the loan example above, Fast Track will not disburse until 3-5 days before you reach half-time enrollment.
Taking Summer Courses at a Different Institution
Need to take a course closer to home that will fulfill a requirement for your degree at Indiana State? Fill out a Consortium Agreement Form located under Miscellaneous Forms on the Student Root forms page.
- This form must be completed by the financial aid staff at the host school and approved by your Indiana State University Advisor and academic Dean, Associate Dean, or Department Chair for your major college before it is submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
- Your Federal aid will disburse through Indiana State University, and any amount exceeding charges at ISU will generate a refund. You will use this refund to pay the tuition at your host school. For faster processing, we recommend enrolling in Direct Deposit.
- Any State aid that you receive during the summer disburses through both the Host University and Indiana State University if you take courses at both schools.
- The Office of Student Financial Aid must receive your transcript from the Host school before any future aid for the Fall term will disburse.
Scholarships
- If you have a merit scholarship and you wish to replace one of your Fall or Spring semesters with a summer term, you must file a Scholarship Appeal prior to the beginning of the summer term. This can be found in the Branch.
- If you need fewer than 15 hours to graduate and you were a first-time, full-time freshman four years ago, you may qualify for Graduation Summer Initiative. This award covers a portion of summer tuition. Applications can be found at the Student Success Office.
- If you are a 21st Century Scholar or a Frank O’Bannon recipient in the summer before your senior year and you are within 6 hours of earning 90 credit hours, you may qualify for the Summer on Track scholarship. You will be identified by the Financial Aid office once grades are posted for the preceding spring term and automatically awarded if you qualify.
- Students who file an application with the Department of Chemistry or Department of Biology to work on a summer research project may be selected to receive a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) award. This competitive program requires an interview with a chemistry or biology faculty researcher. For more information, see https://indianastate.edu/academics/colleges/arts-sciences/chemphys/sure-program.
- Experience Grant funding may be applied for eligible experiences during the summer term. See eligible experiences and application deadlines here.
