Indiana Council of Teachers of English (ICTE)

ICTE, the state affiliate organization of the National Council of Teachers of English, has related to the Department of English for more than fifty years. ISU has hosted numerous state conferences for ICTE and has counted among the faculty past presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, and treasurers of the organization. Although there has been a recent change, for over forty years, the Executive Secretary of the organization has been an ISU faculty member. Laura Bates, the current editor of Indiana English (the state affiliate journal), is a department member, as were the previous five editors.

Students in the Department of English have numerous opportunities to become involved in sponsored activities that can add to and expand their studies, while providing chances to meet with people who share similar interests.

The Creative Writing Society

The Creative Writing Society provides a forum in which students share their interests in creative writing. Each year, the Society, in conjunction with the Honors Program at ISU, produces and publishes Allusions, a publication which focuses on creative writing, as well as the visual arts. Throughout the school year, the Society sponsors public readings of original works of students, faculty, and members of the local community. Each year, a visiting poet or novelist is also invited to campus to give a reading, to conduct workshops, and to visit informally with students.

Sigma Tau Delta

In the past, members of the local chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an international honorary society for English majors and minors, have gone on field trips, visited museums, hosted picnics, gone bowling, had literary-themed costume parties, and had "movie nights." The membership determines the range of the activities, with the Department’s support. Students who meet eligibility requirements (high grades in English and recommendations from faculty) are inducted each spring semester.

The Creative Writing Society

The Creative Writing Society is an extracurricular organization for students across campus who are passionate about creative writing. Each year, in conjunction with the Honors College at Indiana State University, CWS produces and publishes Allusions, an award-winning journal which focuses on creative writing and visual arts, welcoming submissions from ISU students from the beginning of October through Friday of Finals Week. CWS meets weekly throughout the school year and sponsors public events such as readings of original works, Shakespeare Fest, and the Allusions launch party.
