The Department of English at Indiana State offers scholarships to outstanding students majoring in English. Each year in December scholarship applications become available and are accepted until the beginning of March. Scholarship recipients are notified in April of awards for the following academic year. The Department of English Honors & Awards ceremony is held during Study Week to honor recipients.
Each year, the Department of English is excited to award more than $25,000 in scholarships.
Specifically for incoming freshman, the $3000 Creative Writing Scholarship is awarded to a student who declares a creative writing minor or English major with a creative writing concentration in his/her first year and submits a sample of fiction, creative nonfiction, and/or poetry for review by the Department of English Scholarship Committee. This award can be renewed for up to four years.
The Pfennig is our most prestigious award for academic excellence for English majors. This renewable scholarship is a $2000 award for rising sophomores and up majoring in English. This is not a need-based scholarship; rather, it is merit-based and highlights majors’ abilities and accomplishments. Applicants submit an original paper and faculty letter of recommendations, and finalists are selected for an interview with the Pfennig Scholarship Committee.
The Brett scholarship is awarded to full-time students who have declared English education as a major and plan to teach English. This $1000+ scholarship is awarded to one or two sophomore, junior, or senior students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average of a 4.0 scale. A letter of recommendation from a member of the Indiana State University faculty is required.
