POCKET GALLERIES - only one night!

Reception: 12.9.2025, 4-6 pm

About: 'Pocket Galleries’ presents three mini exhibitions by students Evan Aldredge, Jackie Rodriguez, and Tiff Solorzano in the ARTH-418 Curatorial Practice course. These exhibitions showcase 2D artworks ranging from paintings to drawings by various influential artists.

Aldredge’s show explores Van Gogh and the ways his artwork conveys movement. Rodriguez’s exhibition centers on physically disabled women artists, including Frida Kahlo. Solorzano’s show highlights the work of Beksinski and his themes of absurdity and meaning. All three exhibitions feature interactive experiences for the audience—one even invites visitors to try holding a paintbrush in their mouths to paint.

We hope the audience walks away with a deeper appreciation for curation and the unique creativity each student brought to their exhibition.

About: ‘From the 2nd Floor’ is a showcase of student work from the Department of Art and Design’s Digital Art and Graphic Design disciplines. Graphic Design and Digital Art skills and talents often overlap and complement one another in industry and in the classroom. As a reflection of that symbiosis, both disciplines are housed on the second floor of the Fine Arts building here at Indiana State University. The Graphic Design pieces are students’ creative responses and solutions for various marketing, advertising, branding, narrative and user experience challenges. Digital art works include students’ artistic expressions through storytelling, 3D modeling, animation and experimental media, realized using computers and other digital tools. We invite you to enjoy and celebrate the amazing work of our students ‘From the 2nd Floor.’

You are invited to Pulling Ink, an exhibition celebrating student’s prints from the Summer Serigraphy course. Summer Serigraphy is an intro level short, fast, and intense section of printmaking that gives students an introduction to screen print process. Students are asked to develop imagery from a range of prompts that include layered collage, image appropriation, and interpretations of “propaganda”. The work in the current exhibit is an expression of that range and how the students are successfully communicating their unique ideas and voices through print process.

The Curator's Dollhouse

'The Curator's Dollhouse' is a collection of miniature exhibitions crafted by four emerging curatorial students in the ARTH 481 class "Curatorial Practices." The exhibition showcases a range of artwork from acrylic and oil paintings to lithographs and digital artworks.  These miniature shows include historical baroque, neoclassical, and contemporary artists that discuss social commentary intersecting with playful motifs. Each presentation engages the senses with immersive experiences ranging from kinesthetic, audio, and visual activities.  The viewer will enjoy the novelty of 'The Curator's Dollhouse' for the small size of these multiple interactive exhibitions that they would normally not be able to experience in one location. They are provided an insider's view of the curatorial process through the lens of student curators who are presenting the exhibition design. 'The Curator's Dollhouse' is an engaging experience that encourages viewer interaction and the exploration of a wide range of art styles.

‘Stay Focused’ showcases the creativity and technical growth of students across the introductory, intermediate, and advanced photography courses taught by Jamie Nichols. The exhibition features a diverse range of techniques and processes from traditional darkroom to more experimental methods, and highlights each artist’s unique approach to image-making. The collection celebrates the vision of emerging photographers as they explore the possibilities of the medium.

BARE-MONTGOMERY GALLERY
PETITE PERSPECTIVES- a pop-up show!

ONE NIGHT ONLY! December 10, 2024, 4-6 pm

For this one-night-only pop-up exhibition, this semester’s eight Curatorial Practice students use miniature models to curate work by artists of their choosing. By consolidating the gallery to a scaled-down, 3D version of Indiana State University’s own Turman Gallery, the students are able to approach curation as a medium to deliberately communicate what about their artist appeals to them. This was facilitated by delving into the entire curation process, from proposal, to design, to promotion. Following this process, the students incorporated interactive elements for the viewers to become part of each mini exhibition. Petite Perspectives explores works by a wide variety of artists. Each are interpreted by the individual students to appeal to a contemporary audience.

The Haunting of Bare-Montgomery is an annual Halloween art exhibition that takes place in the Bare-Montgomery Gallery located in the lobby of Fair Banks Hall. This will be its 4th season! All featured artworks are by current Indiana State University students, faculty, and staff. Two collaborative projects will also be showcased: Exquisite Corpses by Art + Joy Lab members, and Painted Pumpkins by Art Club members. 
There will be candy, hot beverages, and mini pumpkins and gourds to paint/decorate. Costumes are highly encouraged.

Aug. 19 - Sept. 13, 2024

Eight students in the summer drawing class collaborated on a continuous 30’ drawing, taking inspiration from the architectural and decorative features of Fairbanks Hall. The resulting work was then split into eight sections and the students incorporated self-portraits that echoed the famous historical figures immortalized in the stained glass dome above the gallery. The dynamic process of group decision-making and collaborative creativity led to the energetic and unified work which is now being shown in the very gallery where it was created.

ELEMENTAL

Students in ARTP 170: Introduction to Visual Art created collaborative site-specific earth artworks as their final creative project. Drawing inspiration from artists like Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy, the students worked together in groups to identify the sites and materials they wanted to use and develop design ideas based on the exhibition title, Elemental. Once the designs were agreed on the groups headed outdoors to create their artworks with only the natural materials that were readily available. The posters in the exhibition represent the students’ documentation of that process as well as their project statements.

DIVINE JOURNEY- Dante’s Divine Comedy

In tandem with Roberto Márquez’s show, 'Commedia' in The Yang University Art Gallery, is the 'Divine Journey' in the Bare-Montgomery Gallery. Here you will discover framed woodcut prints on letterpress paper from the 1400s accompanied by an interactive prompt to create and display your own contemporary illustrations inspired by Dante's 'Divine Comedy.' This is a great opportunity to travel through Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise) and see how past and present visuals converge to narrate this epic poem.

13 WAYS OF LOOKING AT A RED CHAIR

In 1917, Wallace Stevens wrote his important poem, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. Influenced by Cubism and Imagism, Stevens looks at his subject from multiple points of view. The resulting series of cantos portray not just one but many blackbirds in situations ranging from observational to abstract and metaphysical.

Inspired by Stevens’ poem, students in the Intermediate and Advanced Painting classes have created the works in this exhibition using a single red chair as their subject. Together, the paintings – like Stevens’ poem – suggest the passing of time and shifting points of view. As viewers, we are asked to enlarge our notion of what a chair is and does through the multiplicity of approaches.

The titles are influenced by the imaginative leaps and lyrical phrasing of Stevens’ poem, and inspired by the thoughts, feelings, and ideas generated in the painting process.

Public Blackness is an exhibition that spans all three of the Art Galleries at Indiana State University. The aim is to create greater awareness of the on-going and often unresolved local and national racial issues. The show is designed to provide a safe platform where ISU students and the broader community can learn, engage, and be inspired to take positive action to help heal and transform outdated and unconscious biases.
 

Public Blackness demonstrates how the Black body in a racially divided society gradually disappears from our understanding of what it means to be a human. What transpires when the Black body is captured in our gaze—a gaze that has been trained to only view it as a problem everywhere it exists? What happens when the myths from our past—which were frequently used to justify its destruction—become ingrained in our imagination of its existence today? One should leave the exhibition knowing a bit more about what makes the Black body vulnerable to the violence it still endures today.
