The online, non-degree Exceptional Needs: Mild Intervention Graduate Add-on Licensure is open to eligible in-state applicants. The program is designed for currently licensed teachers who wish to add special education to their existing teaching license.

The Exceptional Needs: Mild Intervention Graduate Add-on Licensure is an 18-credit online program that prepares you to work with students who have been identified as having mild intervention needs. The online curriculum is designed to be flexible and convenient for teachers who are active in the classroom. This program includes fully online coursework with school-based field experiences.

This program aligns with Indiana Department of Education requirements for an add-on licensure in this area. It shares several courses with Indiana State’s Transition to Teaching: Special Education licensure program, which is designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree but with no active teaching license, whereas this program is specifically designed for currently licensed teachers.

This program is completed through a series of sequential courses and a practicum field experience based on the Indiana Exceptional Needs - Mild Intervention Standards and the Council for Exceptional Children Standards.

Admission Requirements and Application Instructions

Students may begin the Exceptional Needs: Mild Intervention Graduate Add-on Licensure program in August (fall semester), January (spring semester), or May (summer). The admission application and all application materials must be received by the following deadlines to ensure consideration for the desired semester or term.

  • Fall semester entry: June 1
  • Spring semester entry: November 1
  • Summer entry: April 1

The Indiana Department of Education establishes the admission criteria for teaching licensure programs. Applicants must have an active teacher’s license to enroll in this program.

Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. To be official, transcripts must be sent directly from the college attended to: Graduate Admissions, Indiana State University, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809. E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu.

Submit a nonrefundable application fee of $45.00 (U.S. citizens and permanent residents) or $55.00 (international students) payable by Visa, MasterCard, or check or money order payable to Indiana State University. Submit payment to: Indiana State University, Graduate Admissions, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809.

Next Steps 

Once admitted, you will receive notification from the University and will be provided your University ID number, which is needed to activate your University username on the MyISU Portal.
