Processes

Welcome to Indiana State University! A Guide to the Housing Process for Incoming Freshmen and Their Families

We’re excited to have you join the Sycamore family! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the housing process for the upcoming academic year.

December 1: Housing Intentions and Contracts Open

Starting December 1, all first-year domestic students are required to submit a Housing Intention as part of their new student checklist.

  • Living on Campus? You’ll also be able to submit your Community Preference along with your housing contract.
  • Requesting an Exemption? If you’re seeking an exemption from the First-Year Residency Requirement (for valid reasons), you’ll need to submit an Exemption Request Form through your housing portal.

February: Community Preference Notifications

Beginning in February, we will start sending out emails letting you know if your community preference request has been accepted. Keep an eye on your inbox! Community preferences are reviewed weekly for eligibility and space availability.

March: Roommate Search Begins

Once you’ve been accepted into a community, it’s time to find your future roommate! Starting in March, you’ll be able to log in to your housing portal and access the roommate section, where you can:

  • Search for and message potential roommates.
  • If you don’t see someone right away, don’t worry! We’re constantly reviewing applications, and more students are being accepted into communities every week.
  • Once you’ve found a potential roommate, create a Roommate Group and make sure they confirm your request. This is important—you’ll only be able to select a room together if you have a confirmed roommate group.

Note: You’ll only be able to see potential roommates and create groups with students who are in the same community as you.

Mid-April: Time to Select Your Room

In mid-April, we’ll send you an email with a specific day and time for you to select your room. Here’s what you need to know:

  • On your designated day, log in and choose your room. If you have a confirmed roommate, you’ll be able to pull them into your room selection.
  • You can make changes to your room selection until July 1. After that, your choice will be finalized.
  • Room selection days may vary by community, so watch for more details specific to your housing assignment.

Mid-August: Move-In Day!

In July, we’ll provide you with detailed instructions on how to select your move-in timeslot. But for now, mark these important dates:

We’re here to support you throughout the process, so if you have any questions, please reach out to our office. Welcome to Indiana State University—we can’t wait to see you on campus!

Welcome Back to Campus, Returning Sycamores!

Indiana State University is excited to welcome you back for upcoming academic year! Whether you’re already thinking ahead to next year or haven’t had the chance to consider your housing options, we’ve got you covered.

Mark Your Calendar: Housing Contracts Open in November!

Housing contracts for the following year open in November, giving you the chance to secure your on-campus housing for both the Fall and Spring semesters. Take your time to discuss your options with family and supporters, and start planning ahead for the upcoming year.

Why Return to On-Campus Living?

By choosing to live on campus again next year, you’ll continue enjoying the perks that make on-campus life so convenient:

  • Choices: Select from multiple buildings and room styles with one easy contract.
  • Safety: Card-swipe security, desk staff, and secure buildings provide peace of mind.
  • Support: Access to dedicated staff focused on your success as a student.
  • Simplicity: Housing payments are streamlined through your student account—no juggling multiple bills.
  • Connections: Stay close to friends and make even more lasting memories!

Important Reminder: The Housing Contract is Legally Binding

Please remember that signing the housing contract is a legal commitment. Once signed, you’re committed to living on campus for the next academic year. It’s important to fully consider this option before making any decisions—this isn’t a backup plan!
