Program Availability

The 12-credit Sport Coaching Graduate Certificate is offered asynchronously and 100 percent online. Courses are eight weeks, and the program offers six entry points each year: August, October, January, March, May, and June. This certificate is open to U.S. and international applicants who meet admission requirements.

This graduate certificate blends the science of coaching with the psychology of performance. You'll study the physiology behind athlete training, learn to design periodized training programs, and explore how athletes learn and refine motor skills.

Layered on top of that is the psychosocial side of coaching: understanding what drives an athlete's performance and how to support it. This shows you how to lead the whole athlete, not just the practices and workouts.

Everything you learn here can be applied to program planning and athlete development at the level you coach, whether that's a high school team, a college program, or an elite training environment. This certificate also stands as a stackable option within Indiana State's Master of Science in Sport Leadership and Administration, if you want to specialize your degree in coaching.

Every course is fully online and asynchronous, with summer terms available but not required. You can complete this certificate around your coaching season or during it, as best fits your circumstances.

Learn From our Accomplished Faculty

You'll study in small online classes with faculty from the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport, who draw on coaching and sport science backgrounds to provide a practical foundation for the coursework. Their firsthand experience in training and leading athletes informs the course content, so it translates directly into real coaching situations and outcomes.

What You'll Learn in the Sport Coaching Graduate Certificate

The Sport Coaching Graduate Certificate is 12 credits across four required courses, with no elective option. Each course builds a specific coaching capability: understanding the science behind athlete training, designing a periodized program, understanding how athletes learn and refine skills, and supporting the psychological side of performance.
