The online History Graduate Certificate is open to U.S. and international applicants who satisfy admission requirements.

Generally, if students have access to Internet service, they can be admitted to and complete this online program. However, international students must be living abroad—or must hold a visa status that allows them to study online while living in the U.S.—to be admitted. Demonstration of English Language Proficiency is also required.

Students residing in countries where government restrictions or firewalls restrict Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) access or functionality cannot participate in this program.

Admission Requirements and Application Instructions

The Office of Admissions reviews applications year-round for graduate certificate programs. Once enrolled, you may begin courses in the next available term (fall, spring, or summer).

Returning Indiana State University students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended the University in more than two calendar years.

Applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree in history or a minor in history granted by a regionally accredited institution (for international students, a degree granted by a recognized institution).

Applicant must have received a GPA of 3.0 or higher in all undergraduate work.

Applicant must submit the following documents when applying for admission:

  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably from those with experience in history.
  • A personal statement addressing the applicant’s experience with history and/or a closely related field, areas of historical interest, and reasons for applying to the graduate certificate program.
  • A writing sample, preferably a research paper that demonstrates ability in historical research and analysis.

Proof of English language proficiency must be submitted from TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo directly to Indiana State University.

The GRE is not required for admission.

Apply Online

Complete your application through the GradCAS centralized application system at apply.indstate.edu/portal/apply. Follow the Graduate Studies link, then click College of Arts and Sciences to begin your application. 

Instructions for completing the application, including application fees, transcript submissions, and other details, will be provided in the GradCAS application portal. 

Next Steps

Once admitted, you will receive a University ID number and instructions to activate your MyISU Portal account, which provides access to registration, records, email, and important university services.
