Welcome to the Student Counseling Center

Welcome to the Student Counseling Center at Indiana State University – a friendly place where you can find support, guidance, and resources to help you thrive! With a vision grounded in student-centered care, connection, and collaboration, we are actively rebuilding and reimagining the center to better serve the evolving needs of our campus community.

Whether you’re adjusting to campus life, navigating personal challenges, or simply looking to better understand yourself, we are here to support you. Our team is dedicated to creating a welcoming, inclusive space where all students feel seen, heard, and valued.

You don’t need to be in crisis to connect with us. We offer individual counseling, group support, targeted one-at-a-time sessions, a relaxation room, outreach programming, and wellness resources.

We invite you to explore our website, learn more about our services, and reach out when you're ready. We're glad you're here – and we're here for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

All currently enrolled Indiana State University students are eligible to use the Student Counseling Center.

Taking the first step toward support can feel intimidating. We’re here to make the process as simple and welcoming as possible. You can make an appointment in a way that’s most convenient for you:

  • Online: Students will be able to schedule an appointment through the Sycamore Root website. This feature is coming soon.
  • Phone: Call us at (812) 237-3939 during our business hours.
  • In Person: Stop by our front desk on the second floor of Gillum Hall to speak with our team.

The Student Counseling Center is located on the second floor of Gillum Hall, just off 6th Street, directly across from the Parking Services and ID Office. Use the main stairwell or take the elevator to the second floor. Our reception area will be just down the hall.

Your first appointment will typically be a Targeted Session – a focused, one-time conversation designed to help you address a specific concern or take a meaningful next step. We use a One-at-a-Time Therapy model, which allows you to get timely support without needing to commit to ongoing sessions right away.

Some students find the Targeted Session is all they need. Others may return for another Targeted Session later on or be referred for ongoing care. This flexible model helps us respond quickly to your needs while honoring your time, goals, and preferences.

When you arrive, our current process begins with checking in at the front desk. You’ll be asked to scan a QR code to complete a brief set of online forms. These forms ask for basic information – such as your birth date, contact details, and a few questions about why you’re seeking support.

Once you’ve completed your forms, you’ll meet with a counselor for a 45-minute session. Your counselor will help you explore what’s going on and work with you to find strategies, solutions, or next steps.

Yes, we offer same-day walk-in appointments for urgent concerns on a first-come, first-served basis. These are designated for students who are experiencing emotional distress, needing immediate support, or feeling unsure of how to move forward.

Cost of Services

We believe mental health should be accessible, and we work hard to minimize your costs. Thanks to the student wellness fee, most services are low-cost, and your first three sessions are free each academic year. If you continue:

  • Sessions 4-6: a one-time $30 charge
  • Seasons 7 and beyond: an additional $30

Your total cost for counseling during the academic year will not exceed $60, unless no-show or late-cancellation fees are incurred. Summer sessions follow the same model: the first three are free, then $30 for any additional sessions.

All fees are billed directly to your Indiana State University student account. We do not accept insurance or direct payments at the center.

Some students may benefit from or require longer-term counseling or specialized services. In these cases, referrals may be made to either the Grosjean Counseling Clinic or the Indiana State Psychology Clinic. We recommend starting with the Student Counseling Center for referrals to these clinics. Students referred through our office receive three free sessions, and beginning here allows us to coordinate care and connect you with the most appropriate resources. Please note: they may have their own fee structures, which will be discussed with you at the time of referral.

No-Show Fees

After your first missed session, a $10 no-show fee will be charged for each additional missed appointment without prior cancellation. A $15 no-show fee applies to missed second appointments following an intake.

Billing Details

Charges are deposited into your Indiana State account after services are rendered. You’ll typically see charges at the end of each semester to avoid frequent billing. Services are considered a part of a student wellness access model, not billable to insurance. If you have any questions about fees or billing, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re happy to help clarify anything!

Financial Hardship

We never want cost to become a barrier to care. If you’re concerned about affordability, please contact the Director of the Counseling Center to discuss a reduced fee or possible waiver.

A large fountain with multiple streams of water shooting upward and outward is set in a landscaped area. It is surrounded by a paved walkway, trees, and buildings, including a modern glass building on the right and a brick building on the left. The sky is mostly clear with some clouds, and lampposts are visible near the fountain.
