Promotional flyer for Indiana State University College of Arts & Sciences Speaker Series. It announces the Department of Biology’s “18th Annual Earth Day Speaker” featuring Patrick Ray from the University of Cincinnati Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering. The talk is titled “Water When You Want It.” Event details: Tuesday, April 21st, at 7:00 p.m. in Dede I.

Abstract: Water is wonderful, when you want it. Not so wonderful when you don’t. The Earth provides us with water however it feels like it, and we have to cope. Professor Ray will share what he has learned about water in the Ohio River basin – who is managing it, what it’s good for, and how we can manage it better. He will also share stories from his journeys outside of the United States with the World Bank and the United Nations – the kinds of water challenges they face in Mexico, Madagascar, South Africa and Nepal. He will interweave concepts of sustainability, fairness, resilience, and cost-effectiveness, and invite participants to engage with stories of their own.

Bio: Patrick Ray is an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. His research focuses on increasing the resilience of water systems to climate variability and change through the use of advanced climate science and coupled hydrologic-human system simulation. He aims at pragmatism, and decision relevance in a highly uncertain world. He has authored or co-authored books on climate change risk management for the US Federal Government, the World Bank, the International Hydropower Association, and the United Nations. He is currently serving as the UNESCO Chair on Water and Climate Change.
