3+2 Degree Pathway for Athletic Training

The new 3+2 MAT degree pathway provides students the option of completing their B.S. in either Applied Medicine or Exercise Science and their M.S. in Athletic Training, all within 5 academic years. This degree pathway provides an option for students to receive a Master in Athletic Training (MAT) degree at a reduced cost and time burden. Students interested in pursuing the 3+2 MAT degree pathway are encouraged to communicate with their academic advisor as early as possible so that they can create their individualized plan of study. 

Information about these 2 options is available:

  • The B.S. in either Applied Medicine or Exercise Science will be awarded at the end of Summer 3 (the summer between the 3rd and 4th years of the degree pathway). However, students complete all foundational studies, major requirements, and prerequisites for the M.S. in Athletic Training program by the end of the Spring 3 (110 credits). The remaining 10 credits required to earn the B.S. degree are completed by finishing the MAT courses in Summer 3. The M.S. in Athletic Training is awarded at the end of the 5th year of study and the completion of 54 graduate credits in athletic training.
  • Students who follow this degree pathway complete both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in 5 years, compared to 6 years for a traditional student who completes a 120 credit bachelor’s degree over 4 years and then completes the 54 credit MAT program over 2 years. Students will save a full year of tuition costs and livings expenses and will earn an additional year’s salary by entering the workforce a year sooner compared to a traditional student. 
  • Students have the option of completing a minor in Massage Therapy as part of this pathway. The Massage Therapy minor is the only program of its kind in the United States. The minor in Massage Therapy provides students with additional skills that they can utilize during their clinical experience in the MAT program and provides the students an additional profession they can practice.

  • Matriculation into the MAT degree requires a secondary admission process. Once admitted to Indiana State University as an undergraduate, students will declare a major in either Applied Medicine or Exercise Science. Students will work with their academic advisor to follow the 3+2 MAT degree pathway. Students on the 3+2 MAT degree pathway will formally apply to the MAT program during the fall of their third undergraduate year (Fall 3).
  • Students on the 3+2 track are given priority admission over students applying to the MAT program from outside Indiana State University.
  • Students who meet the MAT program requirements will progress into the MAT program during Summer 3 (the summer between their 3rd and 4th years of the degree pathway).
  • Students who do not meet the MAT program requirements will use their fourth year of study to complete undergraduate elective courses to meet the 120 credit requirement for graduation with their B.S in either Applied Medicine or Exercise Science.
