The online Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision is only open to eligible Indiana residents. This master’s is a blended online learning program using a combination of interactive online sessions augmented by required on-campus sessions on Saturdays three (3) times each semester.

The Department of Educational Leadership offers the Master’s in School Administration and Supervision (building administration) for teaching professionals seeking coursework and experience in administration and supervision in a public or private institution.

Our program is a nationally recognized internship experience by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and features an ISLLC and Indiana Professional Standards-guided curriculum. The program includes a practicum for students in the principal internship experience.

The program supports a rolling curriculum, allowing students to start the program any semester or during the summer session. The program can be completed in just over 2 calendar years of full-time study for students taking 2-3 courses per semester, including the summer session. Students do have the option of extending the program should they choose a less aggressive schedule.

Indiana Licensure Information

The Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision fulfills, in part, the building-level administration license requirements established by the Indiana Professional Standards Board. In addition to earning this degree, students also need an Indiana teaching license, two years' teaching experience, and a passing score on the state licensure examination to acquire the licensure.

This program prepares students for licensure or certification in the State of Indiana.

What You’ll Learn in the Online School Administration and Supervision Program

The School Administration and Supervision MEd requires 33 credits of coursework, including the internship. Courses include study in leadership, administration, curriculum, educational psychology, and foundations of education. Culminating program requirements include a two-semester internship and the development and presentation of a professional portfolio.

Career Possibilities for School Administration and Supervision Graduates

Our Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision opens up a variety of career opportunities in the field of education, particularly in K-12 schools, including positions as school principals and assistant principals.

The job outlook is stable, and salaries are excellent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of elementary, middle, and high school principals to show little or no change from 2022 to 2032.

In addition, the coursework and leadership skills obtained in the program are preparation for other career opportunities, including district-level administrative positions overseeing multiple schools, setting policies, and making decisions at the district level. Other career options include positions in educational leadership, coaching, educational consulting, and school improvement.

The MEd is also preparation for doctoral programs, including the University’s Educational Specialist (EdS) in School Administration.

Admission Requirements and Instructions

The program supports a rolling curriculum, allowing students to start the program any semester or during the summer session. The online Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision is only open to eligible Indiana residents.

Admission Requirements and Information   

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate coursework. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all graduate coursework attempted.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required for admission to this program.

Applicants must hold or be eligible for an Indiana Instructional License. Applicants must show documentation of all licenses and certifications held.

Applicants must have a minimum of two years of teaching experience.

Application should include a current curriculum vitae and a personal narrative disposition.

Application should include one letter of recommendation from the applicant’s school principal or other person able to comment on the applicant’s potential as a school administrator. Important: Have the name and email address of your reference available at the time that you are completing your admission application as you will need to enter them in the online application. Explain to your reference that they will receive an email from Indiana State University requesting that they submit a letter of recommendation. Please ensure that your reference expects to receive this request. It will be sent to your reference immediately upon completing the application.

Complete Indiana State University’s online application for admission at apply.indstate.edu/apply/. 

Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. To be official, transcripts must be sent directly from the college attended to: Graduate Admissions, Indiana State University, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809. E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu. 

Submit a nonrefundable application fee of $45.00 (U.S. citizens and permanent residents) or $65.00 (international students) payable by Visa, MasterCard, or check or money order payable to Indiana State University. Submit payment to: Indiana State University, Graduate Admissions, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809. 

Submit the following as part of the online application process.

  

  • A copy of your Indiana teaching license(s) and other certifications.
  • A current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • A Personal Narrative Disposition.
  • One letter of recommendation with the name and email address of the individual.

Note: An application is also available for students preparing for their principal internship experience.

Next Steps

Once admitted, students receive notification from the University as well as their University ID number needed to activate their University Username on the MyISU Portal [https://isuportal.indstate.edu/]. The Portal offers access to online registration, University records, and other important University services, including email and University announcements. 

Note: Returning ISU students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State University for more than two calendar years.
