The program also is open to students in Canada (all provinces). The OSM Program is designed for individuals interested in attaining managerial positions in industrial safety. The curriculum provides a broad foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge of safety administration. 100% Online, Thesis or Non-Thesis Options

This is a 30-credit-hour (minimum) graduate program and includes thesis and non-thesis options. Content areas include systems safety, human factors engineering, program management and evaluation, safety law, and policy analysis.

All courses are offered online. On-campus visits are not required.

One full calendar year is the minimum time for completion; however, realistically you should plan for two years of study. The degree must be completed in no more than seven years (exceptions only granted in accordance with University policy).

Upon completion of the program, you will be qualified as a safety management specialist with expertise to:

  • Evaluate and control chemical, physical, and biological hazards in business and industrial environments
  • Analyze individual and group safety policies and performances

Career Possibilities in Occupational Safety Management

Employment opportunities for occupational safety managers are usually found within industry; federal, state, and local government agencies; insurance companies; the military; labor unions; consulting firms; and healthcare facilities.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of occupational health and safety specialists is projected to grow 5% percent from 2021 to 2031. The Bachelor of Science in Safety Management program is recognized as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. This designation allows our graduates to apply for the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), which puts you one step closer to your Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following to satisfy the minimum requirements:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree in a safety management-related field.
  2. Hold a baccalaureate degree granted by a regionally accredited institution with at least one semester of college-level chemistry and at least one semester of college algebra, trigonometry, or calculus; and
    • Have completed two years of professional work experience within the field (as approved by the department); or
    • Hold personal proficiency recognition via certification.

Listed below are application instructions and deadlines for the online Occupational Safety Management master's degree program. Returning students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State for more than two calendar years.

How to Apply

Complete the online application for graduate admission to Indiana State University at apply.indstate.edu/apply.

Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. To be official, transcripts must be sent directly from the college attended to: Graduate Admissions, Indiana State University, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809. E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu

Submit a nonrefundable application fee of $45.00 (U.S. citizens and permanent residents) or $65.00 (international students) payable by Visa, MasterCard, or check or money order, payable to Indiana State University. Submit payment to: Indiana State University, Graduate Admissions, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809.

Submit the following as part of the online application process:

  • A Statement of Interest describing academic and/or employment experience, as well as the reasons for pursuing the master's degree.
  • A current 1- to 2-page resume.

International applicants must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or provide equivalent evidence of language proficiency. Submit scores to: Indiana State University, Graduate Admissions, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809.
