Program Availability

The Language Studies Certificate program is open to currently enrolled students (except Language Studies BA majors and Language Studies Teaching BA majors) who wish to increase their employability. The program is especially suited for students interested in pursuing a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language. Students with a high school background in a language should take the placement test to determine what courses they should begin with. Students who test into 102, 201, 202 or higher can receive back credit for previous courses.

Please note: the placement test is not a test-out option. Students must complete the course they test into in order to receive back credit. Students should consult with their advisors before enrolling in courses to ensure suitability and to plan their program of study.

This certificate in language studies is also open to working professionals. For application instructions, visit Admissions.

Program Highlights

In the Language Studies Certificate program, you will become immersed in a language of your choice and learn more about that language’s culture. You will complete activities in the language, speak about current events related to the culture, express opinions, and discuss areas of interest using specific vocabulary.

Courses

The Language Studies Certificate program consists of 12 course credits comprising 101, 102, 201, and 202 in a single language: French, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish. The 201- and 202-level courses meet the Global Perspectives and Cultural Diversity learning outcomes of Indiana State’s Foundational Studies curriculum.

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per these transfer guidelines.

Career Possibilities

Successful completion of the Language Studies Certificate program enhances students’ knowledge of a single language. This knowledge could prepare you to teach foreign languages in schools across the United States and abroad. In addition to teaching, a background in a foreign language could lead to other career opportunities and increase employability in international business relations, law, military intelligence, healthcare fields, finance, the U.S. Department of State, and state and local government agencies. Many of our alumni also pursue graduate studies.
