338 Emeritus/Emerita Faculty Status

338.1 Fifteen Years of Service

Regular Faculty who have provided at least fifteen (15) years of continuous honorable service to Indiana State University shall be awarded and conferred the title of Emeritus/Emerita upon retirement except in cases of denial or revocation.

  • 338.1.1  Denial.
    • 338.1.1.1  Petition for Denial. Any petition for denial of Emeritus/Emerita status must be presented, in writing and prior to the individual's retirement, by the immediate supervisor of the retiring party (which is usually the department chair) to the dean of the college in which the retiree served.
    • 338.1.1.2  Statement of Significant Cause.  Any Petition for Denial submitted under Section 338.1.1.1, above, shall state significant cause for denial of Emeritus/Emerita status.
    • 338.1.1.3  Approval of Petition. To deprive the retiree of Emeritus/Emerita status, the petition must be approved by both the dean and the faculty governance body of that college.
  • 338.1.2  Revocation.
    • 338.1.2.1  Petition for Revocation.  After a Regular Faculty member has retired with Emeritus/Emerita status, the Provost may petition to revoke this status.
    • 338.1.2.2  Grounds and Procedures for Revocation.  The grounds appropriate for revocation and the procedures for revocation shall be the same as those for dismissal of Regular Faculty in general.

338.2 Ten Years of Service

Regular Faculty who have provided at least ten (10) years of continuous, honorable service to Indiana State University may, upon nomination from the retiree’s department chair, be awarded and conferred the title of Emeritus/Emerita upon retirement.

  • 338.2.1  Approval of Nomination. Any nomination under this section shall be considered by both the appropriate academic dean and the faculty governance body of that college, and must be approved by both the dean and the faculty governance body.
338.3 Exceptional Cases

In truly exceptional cases, Regular faculty with fewer than ten (10) years of honorable service to Indiana State University may be awarded and conferred Emeritus/Emerita status upon retirement.

  • 338.3.1  Approval of Nomination. In these cases, the nomination and approvals specified in Section 338.2 above shall apply.
338.4 Use of Title

The title Emeritus/Emerita normally will follow the regular professional title, as in “Professor Emeritus of History.”

  • 338.4.1  Continue Scholarly Pursuits. One Emeritus/Emerita status has been conferred, such faculty will be encouraged to continue scholarly pursuits and enjoy participation in University activities.
  • 338.4.2  Laboratory and Office Space. The Emeritus/Emerita retiree will be offered laboratory and/or office space, as available, on campus.
  • 338.4.3  Library Privileges.  The Emeritus/Emerita retiree will retain continued privileges at the ISU library.
  • 338.4.4 Email Account.  The Emeritus/Emerita retiree will retain use of an ISU email account.
  • 338.4.5  Wired/Wireless Access.  The Emeritus/Emerita retiree will retain use of wired and wireless access to Indiana State University computing systems in a fashion identical to that provided regular faculty, generally, without regard to the ownership status of any device by which access to such computing system is established.
  • 338.4.6  Student Recreation Center. The Emeritus/Emerita retiree will retain use of the Student Recreation Center identical to other employees of the University, generally.  This provision shall override any other University Policy Library provisions that could be interpreted to restrict Student Recreation Center use because of age or years of service at separation from service.
