Professor Emeritus of Indiana State University Dr. Jerry Cockrell and his wife Jan Cockrell have pledged $100,000 to expand experiential learning opportunities for students in the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology and the College of Health and Human Services. Their gift will directly support experiences such as internships, externships, research programs, memberships, and other learning programs that provide hands-on learning opportunities that enhance career readiness for students.
“Experiential learning gives students the opportunity to turn knowledge into practice. We wanted to support experiences that allow students to grow, discover their potential, and build confidence in what they can achieve,” said Jerry Cockrell. “Our hope is that students carry those experiences with them long after their time at Indiana State."
The Cockrells are both alumni of Indiana State. Jerry earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics technology in 1974 and a master’s degree in industrial professional technology in 1975. Following graduation, he returned to his alma mater as a professor of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology. He retired as an emeritus faculty member in 2012.
Jan graduated in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in recreation and built a dedicated 40-year career serving the Westminster Village Life Plan Community before retiring in 2021. Since retiring, she has continued her connection to Indiana State as an adjunct faculty member.
Beyond their professional roles, the Cockrells have remained deeply committed to the University. As dedicated Sycamores, they have consistently supported experiential learning opportunities for students. In recognition of their enduring service and generosity, the couple were honored with the March On! Award in 2021.
“Jerry and Jan Cockrell have spent their lives investing in people, and Indiana State is stronger because of them,” said Indiana State University President Mike Godard. “As alumni, educators, and dedicated Sycamores, they have made a lasting impact on our students and our university. This generous gift reflects who they are: people who believe in opening doors for others. Because of Jerry and Jan, more Sycamores will have access to hands-on experiences that build confidence, strengthen career readiness, and create opportunities that can change the trajectory of a student’s life.”
This gift will establish the Jerry and Jan Cockrell Experiential Learning Endowment for the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology and the Jerry and Jan Cockrell Experiential Learning Endowment for the College of Health and Human Services. Both funds will directly support first-generation, non-traditional students who enrolled in either the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology or the College of Health and Human Services as they pursue experiential learning and career readiness opportunities that may not otherwise be possible.
“Because of alumni like Jerry and Jan Cockrell, Indiana State students have more access to opportunities that will shape their academic and professional careers in meaningful ways. Their commitment is a powerful example of how giving back strengthens giving back strengthens our campus and the broader community,” said Andrea Angel, Vice President of University Advancement and CEO of the Indiana State University Foundation.
The impact of this gift will be felt for years to come, as Indiana State students benefit from expanded opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.
