Indiana State University mourns the passing of Dr. Jan McCarthy, Professor Emeritus, pioneering educator, and one of the most influential figures in the history of early childhood education at Indiana State.
For three decades, Dr. McCarthy dedicated her career to preparing generations of teachers, advancing research in child development, and championing the importance of quality early childhood education. As the founder of Indiana State University's early childhood education program, her vision transformed opportunities for children, families, and future educators across Indiana and beyond.
During her distinguished tenure from 1962 to 1992, Dr. McCarthy developed innovative academic programs, established child study laboratory programs that continue to serve children and teacher candidates today, and secured millions of dollars in grant funding to support research, workforce development, and educational initiatives.
A nationally and internationally recognized leader in her field, Dr. McCarthy's work extended far beyond the classroom. She represented the United States and Indiana State University in educational exchanges, conferences, and professional collaborations across the globe, including England, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Nigeria, South Africa, Cuba, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Through these experiences, she helped advance early childhood education worldwide while bringing innovative ideas and global perspectives back to Indiana State.
Her extraordinary contributions earned numerous honors, including two Sagamore of the Wabash awards, Indiana State University's Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award, Faculty Member of the Year recognition, and the March On! Award. Yet those who knew Dr. McCarthy best remember her not only for her accomplishments, but also for her passion for children, her commitment to students, and her unwavering belief in the transformative power of education.
In 2025, Indiana State University proudly opened the Jan McCarthy Early Childhood Education Center, honoring her lifelong dedication to young learners and educator preparation. The center stands as a lasting testament to her vision and ensures that her legacy will continue to benefit children, families, and future teachers for generations to come.
