Indiana State University’s College of Arts and Sciences has launched a new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Media Production, designed to prepare students for careers in live event production, television, film, digital media, esports, and other media-related fields through hands-on training in audio, video, and multimedia production.
The new major was developed collaboratively by the Departments of Theater, Communication, Art and Design, and Student Media. Students will gain hands-on experience and technical training in areas, including broadcast media, film production, audiovisual technologies, venue management, live event production, video gaming and esports, and digital content creation. The program combines coursework and experiential learning opportunities from multiple disciplines, allowing students to develop technical production skills while gaining experience in collaborative media environments.
“The media production major reflects the way today’s media industries operate. Success in the field requires collaboration, technical expertise, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies,” said Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Melinda Roberts. “This program allows students to build a versatile skill set while learning from faculty and professionals across multiple disciplines.”
The program was developed in response to strong student interest and workforce demand. Each semester, more than 100 students participate in Indiana State’s Student Media operations, representing more than 30 majors across campus. Many of these students are interested in careers in television, radio, sports production, film, and digital media, demonstrating demand for a dedicated academic pathway focused on media production.
Students in the program will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities in Dreiser Hall, renovated in 2023 to include modern multimedia production spaces. In addition, Student Media provides access to professional-grade equipment and real-world production opportunities. Faculty supporting the program bring expertise in audio production, lighting, video editing, television and film production, and related fields, further strengthening the hands-on learning environment.
“The Bachelor of Arts in Media Production reflects Indiana State University’s commitment to developing innovative academic programs that align with student interests and workforce needs,” said Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Brad Balch. “By combining hands-on learning with interdisciplinary collaboration, the program prepares students for success in a rapidly evolving media landscape.”
Graduates of the media production program will be well-positioned for careers in broadcast media, film production, digital content creation, live event production, esports, and other media-related industries.
