The Indiana State University Board of Trustees met on Friday, October 25, to approve several significant items that will affect the university’s infrastructure, operations, and academic offerings.
President Mike Godard expressed his enthusiasm for the Board's actions: “Today’s decisions highlight Indiana State’s commitment to enhancing our campus infrastructure, supporting innovative academic initiatives, and honoring those who have left an indelible mark on our university. These steps will further strengthen our position as a forward-thinking institution, and I am excited to see the positive impact these initiatives will have on our students and community.”
Authorization for Repair and Rehabilitation Funding Request
The Board authorized the University Treasurer to request the drawdown of $1,932,790 in Repair and Rehabilitation funding for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The funding, appropriated by the 2023 Indiana General Assembly, will prioritize projects based on deferred renewal studies, Facilities Management Master Plans, and inspections. The top priority is replacing the roofing system for the Facilities Management building, with $1.7 million allocated for the project. The remaining funds will address mechanical and HVAC repairs throughout the year.
Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration Diann McKee emphasized the importance of these improvements, “The funding approved today is critical in ensuring that our facilities are safe, efficient, and up to date. The planned roofing and HVAC repairs will support the ongoing functionality of our campus infrastructure.”
Formation of Credit for Prior Learning Council
The Board approved establishing a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Council, formalizing the work of an ad hoc task force. The CPL Council will maintain consistency, transparency, and accessibility of prior learning assessment processes across Indiana State. This move is designed to enhance the university’s degree completion programs by providing clear guidelines on CPL policies and making them more competitive in attracting adult learners.
Dr. Christopher Olsen, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, stated, “Creating the Credit for Prior Learning Council reflects our commitment to providing nontraditional students with opportunities to leverage their prior experiences and education. By formalizing these processes, we guarantee greater transparency, efficiency, and consistency across the university, which will benefit students and faculty.”
The Naming of John McNichols Memorial Track
Recognizing legendary Indiana State Track & Field and Cross-Country Coach John McNichols, the Board of Trustees approved naming the track at the Gibson Track and Field Complex the John McNichols Memorial Track. McNichols, who led the Sycamores from 1983 until his passing in 2016, was instrumental in building a highly successful track and field program and helped shape Indiana State’s athletic history. His tenure saw 38 team titles and multiple accolades, including his role in developing the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Director of Athletics Nathan Christensen remarked, “John McNichols was more than just a coach—he was a visionary and a mentor who shaped the lives of countless athletes. Naming the track in his honor is a fitting tribute to his legacy, and it ensures that his impact on Indiana State will continue to inspire future generations.”
Homecoming Weekend Festivities
Earlier in the morning, university leaders and members of the Terre Haute community gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology renovations. The project aims to enhance the university’s capacity for innovation and workforce development in technology-related programs. The ceremonial event underscored Indiana State's commitment to preparing students for careers in high-demand fields while fostering strong industry and community partnerships.
As part of this exciting weekend, Indiana State University invites students, alumni, and the community to join the Homecoming celebrations. Saturday’s 100th Blue and White Parade will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by tailgating festivities at Memorial Stadium before the Sycamores’ kickoff at 1:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the festivities and celebrate responsibly.
