When Sycamore Eric Garrett crossed the stage at Indiana State University in 1999, business degree in hand and ambition in his heart, he was ready to take on the world. What he couldn’t have imagined was just how far that journey would take him. Today, Garrett is the founder and CEO of The Garrett Companies – a nationally recognized real estate development firm that’s transforming multifamily housing across the United States.
Garrett’s career began in real estate brokerage, selling apartments nationwide. But it was his passion for development that sparked something bigger. He envisioned a company that could do things differently – and better. That vision became The Garrett Companies, a firm built on innovation, speed, and purpose. Since its founding in 2014, the company has completed more than 70 projects in 22 states, delivering 20,000+ residential units valued at more than $5 billion.
From the beginning, Garrett said, his goal was clear: “To create a work environment that people really enjoy coming to.” He built a culture rooted in collaboration, independence, and trust.
The results speak volumes. With a turnover rate of just 5 percent—far below the industry average of 30 percent—The Garrett Companies has expanded into development and construction, with $2.5 billion currently under construction.
“Our core values haven’t changed since day one. We’re going to solve problems together,” Garrett says. “Mistakes aren’t hidden – they’re part of learning. Business isn’t perfect, but we have to face our challenges as one team.”
That people-first philosophy has earned The Garrett Companies more than 70 workplace culture awards, including recognition from Fortune and Inc. Magazine as one of the ‘Best Places to Work in the USA.’ Innovative benefits like college tuition grants for employees’ children and a strong emphasis on community have helped the company grow, with a new branch in Nashville and plans for expansion into Phoenix.
“We’re always learning something new every day about our industry. We’re exploring how we can bring new markets to the business. Personally, I constantly push myself to build more relationships and expand our team,” Garrett says.
Teamwork is at the heart of everything at The Garrett Companies, he explains. Every employee, no matter how new, is invited to an annual retreat in Telluride, Colorado.
“It’s really important for me to put my employees first. No one needs to be micromanaged,” Garrett says. “I don’t want my employees to feel isolated at work. Collaboration is everything.”

Garrett is also investing in the next generation through the Garrett Internship Program – a hands-on, immersive experience that introduces college students to every facet of the business. Many interns become full-time employees following graduation.
“The internship program has been a game-changer for us. We’re working with young, talented college students who have great ideas. They’re motivated to learn about everything in the company, and that makes a big difference,” he says.
Indiana State University remains close to Garrett’s heart. About 20 alumni work at The Garrett Companies, and current Sycamores are active in the internship program. The Garrett Companies frequently visits students in the Scott College of Business. Garrett says, “Indiana State’s students and grads are hardworking, honest, and humble. That’s exactly what we look for. The rest can be taught.”

Beyond business, Garrett’s commitment to community shines through the Garrett Family Foundation, which provides immediate financial support to families facing trauma—fires, deaths, diagnoses—so they can focus on healing, not bills. Garrett says, “We’ve been blessed as a company, so we want to repay that and make the world a better place. We want to help people during bad times.”
Looking back, Garrett credits Indiana State for preparing him for success. He reflects, “Every business class challenged me. The professors pushed me to be better and to keep getting better. Building relationships and learning from others is how I got to where I am today.”
Garrett’s story is more than a tale of business success. It’s a testament to building communities, going ALL IN to invest in people, and staying true to your roots. And, as someone who regularly mentors current Sycamores, Garrett offers advice for students who are just beginning to explore their careers.
“Be curious. Be willing to learn about everything, even if it’s out of your comfort zone. Master your craft, immerse yourself in whatever position you choose, and focus on culture. You spend as much time with your coworkers and peers as with your family – so love what you do, and you’ll love life.”
