I am Douglas Stevens and I am a first generation college graduate.
I have been a medical professional through my entire career, spanning over 25 years. I have served as a Navy Corpsman and as a Physician Assistant in Urgent Care, Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine and surgical sub-specialties. Many of these years were completed while working in under-served regions of the United States. As a corpsman, beyond my patient care duties, I was responsible for managing the budget of a post-operative med-surgical unit at Charleston Navy Hospital. I understand the need to use limited funds in a strategic, efficient, and responsible manner. This role taught me to be disciplined, organized, and to respect and employ the power of teamwork. As a Physician Assistant, I have worked directly with patients for over 20 years. Physical exam and diagnosis skills are only part of clinical work. Proper care includes working with other services and providers to ensure that an overall care plan is established and that the patient has the resources (transportation, insurance, funds, support, etc.) to allow them to participate in the recommended plan.
I enjoy being a full time faculty member with the Indiana State University PA program since 2018. I am an Indiana State University undergraduate alumnus. As a first generation college graduate, I appreciate not only the quality of instruction but also the comparatively low cost of attendance. I am happy to be a part of the many efforts of this program to reach out to the veteran community. This aligns well with efforts to bring more individuals interested in primary care medicine and with the desire to work in rural health and/or under-served communities.
