The Master of Science in Electronics and Computer Technology is available as an on-campus or online program. The on-campus program is open to eligible U.S. and international students. The online program is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories) and Canada (all provinces). The online program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. and Canada except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

The Master of Science in Electronics and Computer Technology (MSECT) will prepare you for technical and management roles in areas including systems design and development, systems integration, and project management.

Create an Individualized Program of Study

The Master of Science in Electronics and Computer Technology (MSECT) is designed to further the academic preparation and professional advancement of individuals with a bachelor’s degree in, and professional orientation toward, computer technology (hardware) or electronics.

MSECT is a rigorous, individualized program that accommodates students’ previous work experiences, education, and interests. The curriculum sequence includes three program phases that cover the content, application, and integration of related knowledge, theory, and skill.

This master’s degree is available as an on-campus or online program. The on-campus program includes a declared concentration in either automation or information technology. The online program does not have declared concentrations. However, the online student has the option to focus their program of study in either automation and controls or information technology.

Either program can be completed in two years (full time). Students also have the option of part-time study.

What You’ll Learn in the Electronics and Computer Technology Program

The curriculum sequence for the online program includes:

  • A 6-credit-hour core sequence of research courses including: ECT 680 Seminar: Analysis of Technical Systems; and ECT 698 Research in Electronics and Computer Technology
  • A 6-credit-hour research application course of either ECT 697 Major Project or ECT 699 Master’s Thesis
  • A 9-credit-hour application sequence of electronics and computer technology courses
  • A 12-credit-hour elective sequence of major and non-major courses

The curriculum sequence for the on-campus program includes:

  • A 12-credit-hour core sequence of research, research application, and project management courses including: ECT 537 Industrial Computer Systems Management; ECT 679 Problems in Electronics and Computer Technology; ECT 680 Seminar: Analysis of Technical Systems; and ECT 698 Research in Electronics and Computer Technology
  • A 9-credit-hour application sequence of electronics and computer technology courses in the declared concentration area
  • A 12-credit-hour elective sequence of major and non-major courses

Career Possibilities for Electronics and Computer Technology Graduates

The MSECT program is designed for those preparing for career advancement or improvement in automation, information systems, or related support areas. The program is also preparation for doctoral programs, including the University’s Technology Management PhD.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects overall employment in management occupations to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032. The median annual wage was $107,360 in May 2022, higher than the median annual wage for all occupations.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for admission consideration.

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree granted by a regionally accredited institution (for international students, a degree granted by a recognized institution). Applicant’s degree or undergraduate major must be in one of the following areas: computer or electronics technology; computer, electrical, or electronics engineering; or information technology.

Closely related engineering disciplines may be considered on an individual basis provided that an appropriate minor area, or minor area equivalent, in electronics or computer technology/engineering, or information technology was completed with a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0/4.0 in all minor area coursework.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.7/4.0 (67.5%) in all undergraduate coursework; or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 (75%) in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework; or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 (75%) in the applicant's major field of study; or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 (75%) in all courses taken at the graduate level.

International applicants must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or provide equivalent evidence of language proficiency.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required.

Next Steps

Once admitted, students receive notification from the University as well as their University ID number needed to activate their University Username on the MyISU Portal. The Portal offers access to online registration, University records, and other important University services, including email and University announcements.

Note: Returning ISU students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State University for more than two calendar years.
