Indiana State University’s Digital Communication and Media Bachelor of Arts program prepares students for creative career paths in digital media content creation, website development, media entertainment, social media, media production, new media writing, digital storytelling, visual communication, and related digital media fields. Students learn to create contextually appropriate content to meet the diverse needs of individuals, groups, organizations, and other audiences. 

Develop a Strong Portfolio 

In the Digital Communication and Media BA program, you will assemble a strong professional portfolio of digital and media content for a variety of clients, building your communication and media skills in state-of-the-art production studios. Through these learning opportunities, you will develop a practical understanding of media theory and media and society while developing your technical skills in interactive, real-time media production. 

Hands-on engagement with creative projects through independent research, internships, and collaborations with on-campus and community-based organizations will further prepare you for the successful ideation, production, and distribution of media messages for multiple communication channels and audiences.

Indiana State’s instructors can help you take advantage of professional development opportunities through internships and community engagement. Many have experience in multiple areas of digital media production, public relations, and related communication fields. 

In our small classes, you will receive one-on-one assistance and mentorship from professors who will encourage you to participate in volunteer service, advocacy, multimedia productions, study-abroad programs, and other activities that align with your chosen profession.

What You'll Learn in the Digital Communication and Media Program 

The BA in digital communication and media features a diverse curriculum of creative communication classes for every media channel available in professional communication. You will complete a core of communication courses focusing on media and society, interpersonal communication, visual communication, persuasion theories, communication research, print-based media production, digital storytelling, field video production, media criticism, and new media writing. 

Then, you are encouraged to expand your interests in digital media with classes geared toward your specific career aspirations. For example, you may take classes in photojournalism, sports media production, global media, social media management, the Internet as cultural communication, multimedia production, gender communication, film production, and others. 

Your program will conclude with a senior capstone project. In this collaborative learning experience, you will reflect upon and integrate digital communication and media production principles and practices in a way that relates to your career interests. 

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Career Possibilities for Digital Communication and Media Majors

Digital communication and media production is a diverse field with a variety of career opportunities. Many of our graduates hold positions as marketing specialists, social media specialists, public relations specialists, website designers, journalists, and other professionals in the digital media space, which includes video production, graphic design, digital publishing, film, broadcast television, photojournalism, and more. Many also pursue graduate study programs in business and communication.

Join Student Media at Indiana State

Gain hands-on experience in communication practice by joining Indiana State's student media groups:  

  • Sycamore Video, a student-run news program and interview show for digital and interactive media
