Program Availability

The online Deaf/Hard of Hearing program is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories). The program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

Benefit from a Program Designed for Indiana Teachers

The online Deaf/Hard of Hearing Graduate Licensure Program is designed for Indiana teachers seeking the knowledge and skills needed to successfully work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

This 20-credit-hour graduate program can be completed in 24 months of study. Students begin in spring and follow the program sequence (spring: 3 credits; summer: 3 credits; fall: 3 credits; spring: 3 credits; summer: 3 credits; and fall: 5 credits.) Coursework from other colleges/universities in the area of deaf/hard of hearing do not count toward completion of the program.

This is a blended online program. All courses are offered online with required face-to-face classes and weekend seminars.

Licensure Information

Representations on licensing apply to licensing in the state of Indiana only. Individuals outside of Indiana need to check with their local licensing authority to determine reciprocity between their state and Indiana. For important information, visit Licensure or Certification Information.

What You’ll Learn in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Graduate Licensure Program

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing Licensure Program requires 20 credit hours of coursework to be completed over the course of 2 years. Courses include study in assessment procedures, listening and spoken language methods, and instructional accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The program is primarily offered through distance learning. However, there are two weekend components. The PASS Project provides a hotel room for students living more than 50 miles from the meeting room space.

Our Deaf/Hard of Hearing Licensure Program prepares teachers to take the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Licensure Test and fulfill the requirements to add Deaf/Hard of Hearing to their Indiana Teaching License.

Admission Requirements and Instructions

A new cohort of students starts each Spring semester. Applications are due by December 20, with notification of decision by January 5 for admittance in the Spring. Failure to submit all admission materials in a timely manner can delay the admission decision.

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements.

Admission Requirements

Applicant must hold a current Indiana Instructional License.

Applicant must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; - or - a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level.

Applicant must submit a current resume or curriculum vitae including employment information and work experience.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required for admission to this program.

Listed below are application instructions for the online Deaf/Hard of Hearing Graduate Licensure program. Returning ISU students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State University for more than two calendar years.

Complete Indiana State University’s online application for admission at apply.indstate.edu/apply/.

Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. To be official, transcripts must be sent directly from the college attended to: Graduate Admissions, Indiana State University, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809. E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu.

Submit a nonrefundable application fee of $45.00 (U.S. citizens and permanent residents) or $65.00 (international students) payable by Visa, MasterCard, or check or money order payable to Indiana State University. Submit payment to: Indiana State University, Graduate Admissions, Welcome Center, 318 North Sixth Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47809.

Next Steps

Once admitted, students receive notification from the University as well as their University ID number needed to activate their University Username on the MyISU Portal. The Portal offers access to online registration, University records, and other important University services, including email and University announcements.
