The online Graduate Certificate in Advanced English Teaching is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories). The program also is open to students in Canada (all provinces). The program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. and Canada except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.
Our online Graduate Certificate in Advanced English Teaching is an excellent professional development program that prepares high school teachers to teach college-level, dual-credit English courses, and enables community college instructors to teach general education courses in English.
The online Advanced English Teaching Graduate Certificate is an 18-credit program that includes coursework selected among areas such as teaching composition, teaching literature, research methods, creative writing, British Literature before 1800, British Literature after 1800, and American Literature.
A major benefit of the program is its flexibility. Taking advantage of the online format, students can work full-time as they complete their coursework. The program can be completed entirely online in one year without campus visits. Students also have the option of extending the program if work or family obligations require a less aggressive schedule.
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a certificate of completion.
Note: Coursework in this certificate program may be applied toward completion of the University’s on-campus Master of Arts in English. To be eligible, individuals must hold a 3.5 grade point average or higher upon completion of the certificate.
The English Department has long been recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and service. Recent awards include the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award; the Theodore Dreiser Distinguished Research and Creativity Award; the Faculty Distinguished Service Award; and the President’s Medal, the University's highest award for faculty.
As a graduate student, you will benefit from small classes taught by faculty with diverse specialties, including British and American literature, rhetoric, and creative writing. Most hold doctoral degrees, and many publish books and articles, conduct research, edit journals, and speak at national and international meetings within their specializations.
Our online Graduate Certificate in Advanced English Teaching includes 18 credits of graduate-level coursework in English. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be better able to: understand the conventions and concerns of Literary Studies; explore and evaluate complex ideas through writing; and understand strategies for teaching literature and writing at the post-secondary level.
The online Graduate Certificate in Advanced English Teaching meets the needs of high school teachers in need of 18 credits at the graduate level for promotion and/or to teaching college-level, dual-credit language arts courses.
In addition, completion of this certificate enables community college instructors to teach general education courses in English.
Returning Indiana State students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State University for more than two calendar years.
The online Graduate Certificate in Advanced English Teaching supports a rolling curriculum, allowing students to start the program any semester or during the summer session. Applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure admission. The admission application and all application material must be received by the following deadlines to ensure consideration for the desired semester or term.
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements; however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
Conditional admission may be granted to applicants on the basis of grades in language and literature courses, undergraduate grade point averages, GRE verbal and advanced literature scores, faculty letters of recommendation, and writing samples.

Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. Once admitted, students receive notification from the University as well as their University ID number needed to activate their University Username on the MyISU Portal. The Portal offers access to online registration, University records, and other important University services, including e-mail, and University announcements.
