Program Availability

The online general studies program is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories). The program also is open to students in Canada (all provinces). The program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. and Canada except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

Why Earn an Online Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies at Indiana State?

As a student in Indiana State’s online general studies program, you will develop stronger critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills valued by employers. Each student works with an academic advisor to create a flexible, convenient, and individualized program of study tailored to support their career goals. All courses are offered online. On-campus visits are not required.

Eligibility

The online general studies program is designed for transfer students who have already earned 75 or more college credits from a regionally accredited college or university and now wish to complete their four-year degree. You may be eligible for the program if you have a cumulative grade point average of no less than 2.0 in all prior undergraduate coursework.

The online general studies program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and is offered in cooperation with the Colleges of the University. All classes in the academic program are developed and taught by professors with diverse specialties. Most hold doctoral degrees and regularly engage in research and scholarly activities. They incorporate their professional experience into engaging class discussions and projects.

Our small online class sizes ensure that instructors can provide individualized feedback and one-on-one mentorship throughout the program. They will support you every step of the way through your academic studies and career planning.

What You'll Learn in the Online General Studies Program

You will work with an academic advisor in the General Studies BA/BS program to develop your personalized plan of study. This academic plan must be approved by the General Studies Council.

Other requirements include the following:

  • Completion of a minor or equivalent
  • Completion of seven upper-division integrative elective courses or the completion of a second minor
  • Completion of General Studies 499 and a General Studies capstone project in the final semester

Note: If you select the two-minor option, you must complete at least one existing minor as identified in the catalog at Indiana State University.

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Career Possibilities for Online General Studies Majors

Graduates from the online General Studies BA/BS program are prepared for a variety of career options. While careers vary depending on the minor and coursework selected, all graduates possess the critical skills to solve problems in real-world situations; analyze theories; integrate disciplines to develop an interdisciplinary perspective; access information using technology including the Internet, online libraries, and databases; demonstrate effective oral and written communication strategies; and work collaboratively in diverse groups.

Many of our graduates also have pursued graduate study programs in a variety of disciplines.
