Why Earn an Online Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Management at Indiana State?

As an online safety management major at Indiana State, you will gain the knowledge and experience needed to become a qualified safety specialist for business, industry, and government. This convenient online program prepares you to help promote a healthier workforce and reduce workplace risks to the safety and well-being of all individuals. Indiana State University is one of the first universities in the United States to offer a bachelor’s degree in safety management.

This degree program is available online. However, online students are required to complete a one-week residency on the Indiana State University campus in Terre Haute during summer of their junior or senior year. This program can be completed in four years (full-time), but students also have the option of part-time study.

In this program, you will study accident prevention, industrial health and safety legislation, and safety analysis, and learn how to design and implement safety programs for a variety of workplace environments. Through practical, collaborative experiences with your professors and peers, you will observe environmental health- and safety-related practices and learn how to identify technical problems, conduct experiments, and test hypotheses. You will use scientific judgment to make important decisions regarding the safety and well-being of others in workplace environments.

Our small online class sizes ensure that instructors are able to provide personalized feedback and one-on-one mentorship throughout your program. And, as an online safety management student, you will complete a one-week residency on the Indiana State campus, which will allow you to meet your professors in person and to participate in mentorship activities.

As an online safety management student, you are invited to join the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) student section. This involvement will allow you to qualify for scholarships. In addition, ASSP and the National Safety Council (NSC) offer discounts on conference registrations.

What You'll Learn in the Online Safety Management Program

The online BS in safety management includes studies in: accident prevention; the administration of industrial health and safety programs; fire protection; hazardous substances and waste disposal; human factors and economics; industrial health and safety legislation; industrial hygiene, and system safety analysis. Our program prepares you to solve technical and scientific problems in real-world situations.

You will also complete an internship. Our online program offers access to paid experiences in manufacturing, healthcare, power and energy, refinery facilities, insurance (loss control) companies, and government agencies. Our students have previously completed internships at companies including Alcoa, Cargill, Eli Lilly and Company, General Electric, Pfizer, Inc., and Toyota, among others.

Transfer Credit

Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Recognitions and Designations

The online Bachelor of Science in Safety Management program is recognized as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. This designation allows our graduates to apply for the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), which puts you one step closer to your Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.

The program is also recognized by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management and allows our graduates to apply for the Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) credential.

Career Possibilities for Online Safety Management Majors

With frequent changes in manufacturing technologies, evolving behavioral approaches to safety and risk management, and new federal regulations, safety management is an exciting career choice. Our online safety management program enjoys a placement rate well above 90%, with many of our graduates beginning their careers as mid-level managers.

Opportunities include positions as safety managers/directors, environmental health and safety specialists, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance officers, safety managers, environmental managers, occupational health managers, risk assessors, or industrial hygienists. Many of our students also pursue graduate study following graduation.
